A New Era for the Riviera on Vaal Hotel

Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club

  -04-10:    Riviera on Vaal Hotel

After acquiring and managing the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club since 2003, the owners have decided to enter into a long term lease agreement with the well established group, BON Hotels. As of 3 April 2014, the Riviera on Vaal Hotel will be operated by BON Hotels.  The adjacent Riviera on Vaal Country Club and Zorgvliet Spa will remain under the owner’s management.  Zorgvliet Spa recently moved its location, now situated at the Riviera on Vaal Country Club. A new Zorgvliet Spa branch at Maccauvlei on Vaal has also recently opened its doors.

“We were very fortunate that BON Hotels employed the majority of the Hotel’s current staff,” says Melanie van Schalkwyk, co-owner of the Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club and owner of Zorgvliet Spa. “I am very excited about this new beginning for Riviera on Vaal Hotel, as BON Hotels will certainly add value to our property in the years to come.”  The hotel will be re-named, BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal.

In the words of Guy Stehlik, CEO of BON Hotels, “We look forward to waking her up to her former glory, with a more modern look and feel and a particular focus on providing excellent service to clients, suppliers and most of all, the guests!”

Bat & Owl Boxes at Maccauvlei on Vaal!

We are pleased to say that our new bat and owl boxes have been erected at Maccauvlei on Vaal! Clueless as to why we would erect these boxes at our establishment? Here’s why:

As occupants, we need to take responsibility for protecting the natural heritage of this area. Bat populations are very susceptible to high mortality because of their low productive rates, and there is scientific concern about the conservation status of bats, as many species of bats are increasingly affected by multiple actions of humans (NSPCA, 2012). By erecting bat boxes, bats are offered and alternative roost as opposed to habitation in residential areas. Bats also assist in insect control, so it’s a win-win situation!

Above: Bat box being erected at Maccauvlei on Vaal

As for the owl boxes, many owls hunt within residential and suburban areas and although food is available, breeding sites are not sufficient. By erecting owl boxes, the owls will utilise these boxes for nesting purposes. Owls staying in the area will assist with the control of rodents as well as numerous insect types. Feel free to come and have a look at our newly erected owl and bat boxes at Maccauvlei on Vaal, we trust that this will contribute to the conservation of our surrounding natural habitats and their occupants!

Keeping the Vaal River clean

Keeping a river like the Vaal River clean could be quite the challenge.

With the Vaal River being the largest tributary to the Orange River and the second longest river (1210 kilometers) in South Africa, it is challenging to get buy-in from the whole country to acknowledge their environmental responsibility. The Vaal River is a key water source for the country, supplying water to South Africa’s industrial heartland, including Johannesburg and Pretoria. It forms an integral part of the Vaal’s wonderland for bird life and fish. If we don’t keep it clean, we endanger our natural ecosystems.

Keeping the Vaal River clean

Keeping the Vaal River clean

In March 2012, the Department of Water Affairs’ spokesperson, Mandla Mathebula, confirmed that reports indicated that the Vaal River will be unfit for human consumption in 2014.

Pollution in the Vaal River is caused by a variety of sources, including waste water works, acid drainage from mines, locals emptying their trash into the river as if it is a dump yard and the lack of sanitation supplies.

Nelson Mandela once said: “We attach a great deal of importance to the question of the environment because until we do things which show how much we value the environment, we are not going to be able to have a healthy society in the world.”

How can we assist in preserving the Vaal River’s cleanliness to create a healthier local society in the Vaal Triangle?

  • Government should take better care of the rural and under-developed populations.
  • Rural populations should be educated on sanitation and clean water supplies.
  • Local companies should join forces with organisations that have the same passion about environmental responsibility. (SAVE is a non-profit organisation which focuses on protecting and maintaining the environmental integrity of the Vaal River).
  • Day visitors and tourists who visit the Vaal for water sport adventures should act in an environmentally responsible manner when it comes to plastic bottles, tin cans, etcetera.
  • Mines and municipal waste water treatment works should maintain their waste systems on a regular basis.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club, as well as its sister company, Maccauvlei on Vaal, takes their responsibility to the environment very seriously and encourage you to join them in protecting the Vaal River from pollution.

A new General Manager has been appointed to manage the well known family resort on the banks of the Vaal River: Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club.

Charl Campher joined the team at the Riviera on Vaal on 1 April 2013. He has been appointed as General Manager after proving his skills and expertise in the industry locally and internationally.

His experience in the industry comes from working at establishments like the Mount Grace in Magaliesberg and the Metropolitan Beach Hotel in Dubai. He broadened his horizons even further by taking up positions on American Cruise Lines working in North and South America, where after he returned to South Africa. With Campher being a member of the Chain des Rottiseurs and with his 19 years experience in the hotel industry, it is only natural to be excited about welcoming him back under the Riviera on Vaal’s management.

Why a winter wedding is the perfect option

Winter weddings in the Vaal

Winter weddings in the Vaal

Would you consider a winter wedding rather than to get married in spring or summer? Is it too much to ask? I’d urge you to think again.

Not only is it more affordable to get married in winter, due to the fact that most brides want to get married in summer, but you could also use the season to your advantage by creating the most unique wedding ever. It is always funny to see how people compare different weddings they’ve been to. Something that is always mentioned during these comparisons is the similarities to previously attended weddings.

By getting married in winter, you decrease the possibility of using similar décor to that of your friends’ weddings and you give yourself the opportunity to think creatively. Not every bride is able to pull off a winter wedding that has everyone in awe. Make it a challenge. In fact, encourage your groom to come up with winter wedding ideas – you’ll be surprised with his creativity and knowledge.

Another reason for getting married in winter has to do with two lovely venues beside the Vaal River which provide scenic settings even in the colder, dryer seasons. The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club, situated on a bend in the Vaal River, boasts elegant wedding venues with the river featuring as one of the Resort’s photographic hotspots. Maccauvlei on Vaal is the ideal autumn or winter wedding venue with its historic oak forest and original wooden interiors.

For more information on these two venues and the wedding packages they have on offer, contact the Riviera on Vaal team on 016 420 1300 or reservations@rivieraonvaal.co.za or contact Maccauvlei on Vaal on 016 420 2000 or res@maccauvleionvaal.co.za.

Auditoriums in the Free State

When thinking of auditoriums in the Free State, the only town or city that comes to mind is Bloemfontein. But, after Maccauvlei on Vaal reopened its doors in March 2013, the Free State got to add another auditorium to its list which is not only in the Free State, but also easily accessible from Johannesburg next to the Vaal River.

Maccauvlei on Vaal Country Lodge and Conferencing Venue, on the border of the Free State and Gauteng, has an auditorium large enough to accommodate at least 120 delegates. Whether it is for a conference or training, companies can now easily accommodate their employees at the same venue at an affordable price.

In addition to that, companies can also do team buildings, play golf and take part in snooker tournaments at Maccauvlei on Vaal.
