Blankets and Beanies for Children

They say we need to be there for our brothers and sisters in need. Matt’s Foundation encourages you to be there for your brothers and sisters and their children this winter by sponsoring blankets and beanies for the underprivileged children of the Vaal Triangle.

Blankets and Beanies

Blankets and Beanies

Winter tends to catch us by surprise every year and we can never be prepared enough. Matt’s Foundation would like to collect and hand out blankets and beanies to children before winter truly catches up with us. This non-profit organization, supported by the Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club and Maccauvlei on Vaal, provides underprivileged children in the Vaal community with basic needs like food and clothes and this time of the year, blankets and beanies are a definite basic need to keep children warm and assist them in concentrating on their school work, rather than trying to warm up their little hands.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club challenges local companies and individuals to get involved in this initiative and offers the person who donated the most blankets and beanies before 12 June 2013 the chance to win breakfast for two at Matthews Restaurant.

Volunteers are always needed at Matt’s Foundation. Should you want to sponsor winter warmers or assist in delivering blankets and beanies to the children, please contact Matt’s Foundation on 016 420 2245 or helpus@mattsfoundation.co.za.

Matt’s prepares for Christmas at River Square

Vereeniging – 2 November 2012. Matt’s Foundation will be manning a gift wrapping and donation station at River Square from 5 November until 8 December. All proceeds will go towards creating an extra special Christmas for all the children Matt’s Foundation supports.

A large Christmas tree will be the mascot of the campaign, carrying hearts with children’s names written on them. Shoppers passing by can pick a heart from the tree, representing a child from the Vaal Triangle’s Christmas gift which they can then sponsor. Matt’s Foundation will assist in wrapping the presents and delivering them to safe houses and orphanages supported by the Foundation. Additional funds will also be raised by selling Matt’s mugs, fridge magnets and Christmas tree decorations. The Christmas tree decorations were all handmade by the children themselves.

Matt’s Foundation is in need of volunteers to help man the Christmas station. To offer your assistance, please contact Carmen on 016 455 6100 or email helpus@mattsfoundation.co.za.

Vaal Community competes to raise funds

One of the potjies that was made on the day

One of the potjies that was made on the day

Vereeniging – 15 October 2012. Matt’s Foundation, a well known non-profit organization in the Vaal, hosted their annual Potjiekos Competition combined with a Garage Sale at the Riviera on Vaal Country Club on Saturday, 13 October 2012. The Riviera on Vaal Country Club sponsored the venue for the day.

The teams’ potjies were judged externally and the winners were announced after a fun filled morning of cooking and competing. The team, Golden Oldies, was given first prize for the overall best potjie. Park Motors Alfa Romeo seized the second spot and also received an additional prize for having the best décor. Team Em-jee received third prize and the fourth prize went to a team called Three men and a lady. The prize for the team with the best spirit on the day went to the Foo-D Fighters and the most disorganized team, the Panty Hose, also received a consolation prize.

Bruno and Lloyd teamed up to provide the cooks and the audience with live entertainment for the day while Tapimanzi Adventures sponsored a variety of inflatables that kept the kids busy for hours on end. In between, competitors and visitors were able to enjoy a draught or two at the beer tent, sponsored by SAB Breweries, and shopaholics were able to catch a few bargains at the garage sale.

The aim of the day was to raise funds to be able to assist in providing for the basic needs of the children of the Vaal community – especially with Christmas soon approaching. Matt’s Foundation’s slogan is to “love the children” and therefore the potjiekos competition and garage sale were held in honour of just that. Many locals jumped in and volunteered to help on the day, including the Riviera on Vaal Hotel who sponsored side salads, fresh bread rolls, cutlery and staff. Matt’s Foundation would like to thank everyone who participated in making the day a great success.

RIVIERA ON VAAL: Cheers to the next 85 years

After turning 85 in August, 2012, the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club has big expectations not only for the near future, but also for the next 85 years and counting.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club has had a big year thus far, indicating that they are endeavoring to become one of Gauteng’s environmentally friendly hotels. With the Riviera on Vaal being but a speck in the milky way of the hospitality industry, they take on challenges in the same capacity as other bigger hotel groups in the country. As an independent hotel they are proud to have achieved what they have in the past almost decade and plan on achieving even more in the next few years. With the world and the tourism industry becoming more and more environmentally attentive, it is establishments like the Riviera on Vaal’s responsibility to set an example within their communities.

To thrive, hotels need to understand and embrace the needs of their guests as well. It is important to consistently inject new life and different experiences into their offers, which keeps the ideas current while still embracing present styles and techniques. The Riviera on Vaal strives to decrease environmental impact and increase social responsibility within its local community. Recruiting staff from the local community and using local suppliers are also some of Riviera on Vaal’s highest priorities. They have developed ABET (Adult Basic Educational Training) programmes, as well as student internships. Riviera on Vaal is also consistently involved with Matt’s Foundation, a local non-profit organization responsible for loving the children of the Vaal. The organization provides basic needs to numerous children’s homes, safety houses and shelters in the local community.

Furthermore, the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club has made it their priority to become more and more involved in the protection of their environment. The first steps have already been taken, which granted them a silver classification from Heritage, a South African environmental management company.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club has also created relationships with numerous local companies to increase their guests’ experiences at the resort. These companies include Tapamanzi Team Building as well as Twin Boats who will be assisting the hotel with a multitude of water sport activities. Riviera on Vaal would like to thank all companies, suppliers, guests and staff members who have supported the hotel and the country club over the past 85 years and they look forward to sharing their special experiences for special people with their loyal customers and suppliers in the years to come.

General Manager, Leonie Herselman, has been at the Riviera on Vaal for just over a year now and with her management team they have been able to recreate the original essence of the Riviera on Vaal Hotel: special experiences for special people. A feel of unity has been created amongst staff and therefore the hotel seems to have a prosperous future ahead.
