The Riviera on Vaal Country Club will be hosting a Golf and Fishing Festival on 26 and 27 April 2013, as part of their fund raising project for the revamping of several components of the golf course. This will include the repositioning of the greens of holes 8, 14 and 16.
As part of the Greens Fundraising Project a weekend of golfing and fishing will commence on Friday, 26 April, where participants will be able to enjoy a game of golf beside the Vaal River at R250.00 per person. The fun will continue the next day when golfers and fishermen can team up to win great prizes. Partner up with a golfer as a ghost partner and fish for carp, barbell and bass from the Riviera on Vaal golf course’s dams. The larger the fish, the more points and the larger the prizes. Fishermen can enter the competition at R100.00 per person, Riviera on Vaal Country Club members can enjoy a round of golf at R200.00 and golfing visitors at R250.00 per person.
During the day on Saturday, 27 April, visitors will be able to enjoy refreshments from SAB’s sponsored beer tent. Other sponsors for the Golfing and Fishing Festival include Inyama Grill House and TailorMade.
With the Riviera on Vaal Country Club, formerly known as the Vereeniging Country Club, being one of the Vaal region’s historical gems, it is only natural to want to build on its glory. With legends like Bobby Locke linked to its name, the Riviera on Vaal Country Club has a reputation to withstand. Raymond Pienaar from the Vaal Meander mentioned in a 2007 publication that “the golf course has never been as good as it is today and things continue to improve.” The current status of the golf course and the plans of repositioning some of the holes still justify this statement in 2013. Since the launch of the Vereeniging Country Club’s golf course in 1938 huge amounts of time, effort and money have been ploughed into this golf course and more recently this included new irrigation, soil rejuvenation programmes, machinery, pathways and other infrastructure. The improvements planned for the near future are only an addition to these efforts to provide golfers and visitors of the Riviera on Vaal Resort with luxury golfing facilities.
The funds for this golf course upgrade will be generated from the club’s green and annual subscription fees, as well as funds raised by similar events such as this Festival. Leon Kruger, General Manager of the Riviera on Vaal Country Club, encourages golfers (and in this case fishermen) to take part in this event: “It is a fun way to make a significant contribution to a golf course built for the enjoyment of community members and local golf lovers. We want to improve the golf course and put it in a championship golf course league.”
