New Head of Coaching at Riviera on Vaal Country Club

Golf lessons

Natasha Swanepoel – Head of Coaching at Riviera on Vaal Country Club

Meet the newest member of the Riviera on Vaal Country Club team! Natasha Swanepoel studied sport science specializing in golf at the University of Pretoria, the first institute to combine a degree with the PGA requirements. During her 3 years of studying, part of the practical requirements was to coach under the TuksGolf name, coaching all ages. After her degree, she worked at Kempton Park Golf Club where she was involved with coaching group sessions for school kids and the Development Academy where she taught basic golf to under privileged kids. She recently started working at Riviera on Vaal ProShop, and has taken over the coaching.

Golf lessons

Anyone is welcome to come for lessons. Kids get the opportunity to learn basic golf and also develop motor learning skills. Men have the opportunity to master their golf as well as master a specific shot desired. Ladies have an opportunity to spend quality time with their partners by learning the game and being able to play a round of golf with them. “Golf is a working progress and should be taught from a step by step approach,” where she begins her focus with the 4 basic fundamentals of golf. Once these four fundamentals are mastered, you will move on the 5 laws of golf. Last but not least are the technicalities of golf, the shot principles and the list goes on. This is more specific to your individual faults and will be her focus with the more advanced players.

Lessons are available for new golfers (from primary school up to adults) as well as advanced players who would like to improve their technique. For more information about golf lessons, please contact the ProShop on 016 420 1347.

For more information contact Natasha Swanepoel, Head of Coaching at Riviera on Vaal ProShop.

Riviera on Vaal’s Christo Roos wins 2013 PGA Apprentice Championship

The new Professional Golfers Association Apprentice Champion is none other than Riviera on Vaal Country Club’s Christo Roos. Winning his first major golf title, Roos bagged this win with an impressive 69 shots in the first round playing the East course and 73 in the second round playing the West course. “I finished the first day of the tournament leading by six shots; I played my best round on the most difficult course,” said the proud golfer.

The tournament took place at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington course.  Roos beat a total of 90 other golfers, playing 36 holes over the two day tournament. There were players from all over South Africa and some from neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Zimbabwe. Roos walked away from the win with a monetary prize as well as the chance to represent South Africa in the World Finals taking place in Australia later this year.

Now in the third year of his PGA training, Roos started playing golf under the encouragement of his father at the tender age of four years. The game of golf runs in his family with his older brother, sometimes mistaken for his twin brother, also being a qualified PGA Professional. “I enjoy playing golf because it doesn’t feel like work. I get to do what I teach on the course. When I play I get to practise and get away from everything,” said the budding professional.

The Riviera on Vaal Country Club’s General Manager, Leon Kruger said: “Christo has made us very proud by winning. He played an excellent game and deserves the Championship. He has been with the Riviera on Vaal Country Club for the past two and half years and he continues to add value to our company.”

Christo Roos gives golf clinics and lessons at the Riviera on Vaal Country Club. He says that he enjoys playing the Vaal River golf course because of its layout and views. He also enjoys interacting with the club members.  His golf tip is that you should focus on your rhythm and to keep from hitting the ball too hard.

Riviera on Vaal Golfing and Fishing Festival

The Riviera on Vaal Country Club will be hosting a Golf and Fishing Festival on 26 and 27 April 2013, as part of their fund raising project for the revamping of several components of the golf course. This will include the repositioning of the greens of holes 8, 14 and 16.

As part of the Greens Fundraising Project a weekend of golfing and fishing will commence on Friday, 26 April, where participants will be able to enjoy a game of golf beside the Vaal River at R250.00 per person. The fun will continue the next day when golfers and fishermen can team up to win great prizes. Partner up with a golfer as a ghost partner and fish for carp, barbell and bass from the Riviera on Vaal golf course’s dams. The larger the fish, the more points and the larger the prizes. Fishermen can enter the competition at R100.00 per person, Riviera on Vaal Country Club members can enjoy a round of golf at R200.00 and golfing visitors at R250.00 per person.

During the day on Saturday, 27 April, visitors will be able to enjoy refreshments from SAB’s sponsored beer tent. Other sponsors for the Golfing and Fishing Festival include Inyama Grill House and TailorMade.

With the Riviera on Vaal Country Club, formerly known as the Vereeniging Country Club, being one of the Vaal region’s historical gems, it is only natural to want to build on its glory. With legends like Bobby Locke linked to its name, the Riviera on Vaal Country Club has a reputation to withstand. Raymond Pienaar from the Vaal Meander mentioned in a 2007 publication that “the golf course has never been as good as it is today and things continue to improve.” The current status of the golf course and the plans of repositioning some of the holes still justify this statement in 2013. Since the launch of the Vereeniging Country Club’s golf course in 1938 huge amounts of time, effort and money have been ploughed into this golf course and more recently this included new irrigation, soil rejuvenation programmes, machinery, pathways and other infrastructure. The improvements planned for the near future are only an addition to these efforts to provide golfers and visitors of the Riviera on Vaal Resort with luxury golfing facilities.

The funds for this golf course upgrade will be generated from the club’s green and annual subscription fees, as well as funds raised by similar events such as this Festival. Leon Kruger, General Manager of the Riviera on Vaal Country Club, encourages golfers (and in this case fishermen) to take part in this event: “It is a fun way to make a significant contribution to a golf course built for the enjoyment of community members and local golf lovers. We want to improve the golf course and put it in a championship golf course league.”

Contact Leon for bookings and more information on 016 430 1380 or gm@rovcountryclub.co.za.

And the winner is…

The N3 Gateway Tourism Association recently hosted a competition in conjunction with tourism organizations and establishments along the N3, including the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club, with the aim of creating awareness of the N3 Gateway brand and growing their social media community.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club joined forces with Vaal 21 (a cross-border initiative between Sedibeng’s municipalities) to assist in gaining more exposure for the Vaal Triangle through its involvement at relevant Tourism Expo’s. They also recently sponsored one of the Getaway Show competitions’ prizes, which included a two night weekend for two, dinner and breakfast as well as a spa treatment at the Zorgvliet Spa or the option of a round of golf for each person. This fabulous prize was valued at R15 000.00. Mrs. Karin Coetzer Swanepoel was the lucky winner of the grand prize and she commented the following on winning the prize: “Thanks to N3 Gateway Tourism Association and also to the Interim Regional Tourism Council’s Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club for my super prize!”

Most of the competition entrants enjoy relaxing with friends and spending time with their families. Photography, eating at restaurants, visiting historical sites and health spas were also some of the holiday interests that were highlighted during the competition, which made the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club’s prize worth every competing effort.

More information on the N3 Gateway Tourism Association could be found on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/N3Gateway, or visit their website on www.n3gateway.com.
