Christmas DIY for kids

It’s scary to think that Christmas is around the corner once again! But for kids this means family, presents and crafts!

Here are some great DIY Christmas ideas for kids – the ideal way to keep them busy over weekends and during the long summer holiday.

Make your own tree ornaments:

Collect all the old buttons lying around at home and create your own tree ornaments from that. Glue them together and tie a pretty ribbon around them to hang it on your Christmas tree this year.

Make your own rustic Christmas tree:

Pick up some branches from your garden. Remember to use different shapes and sizes. Fill a vase (preferably glass) halfway with pebbles or stones to help anchor your Christmas tree. If you want to paint some of the branches, remember to sand them first to remove all dirt and loose bark. Use a white undercoat if you are using bright colours. You don’t have to paint all of the branches – be creative and dip some of the branch tips in glue and glitter or even acrylic paint for a modern look. Plant the branches in the vase and hang a few Christmas decorations to finish off your rustic Christmas tree.

Decorate your own Christmas wish can:

Christmas gifts are always something to look forward to. Decorate your own Christmas wish can and whenever you think of something you would like to have for Christmas, write it on a piece of paper and put it in the can. That way Father Christmas will know exactly what to give to you on Christmas evening.

Make a Christmas gift for your teacher:

Need some brownie points? Bake a few brownies and fill a mason jar with it. Tie a red or green ribbon around it with a note that reads: Merry Christmas! Toffee apples are also a good idea for Christmas gifts.

DIY gift wrap:

With gift wrap being so expensive during Christmas time, why not make your own? This way the gifts you hand out have an extra personal touch. Take blank sheets of wrapping paper (brown, white, green, red, silver or gold) and paint your own creative shapes and pictures onto it. Make thumbprints, draw Christmas trees, make hand and foot prints and make pictures from it. Think out of the box and have fun with paint and paper!

Riviera’s Earth Day tips for kids

Earth Day is described as the day on which we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Riviera on Vaal, being a family resort, would like to see kids grow up in an environment where every day is Earth Day.

Earth Day tips for Kids

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club, situated on the banks of the Vaal River, considers environmental responsibility as one of their top priorities. The Hotel boasts various kinds of kids’ entertainment options which gives them the ideal opportunity to teach kids how to make every day Earth Day by means of appreciating and protecting their environment.

Here are a few Earth Day tips for kids from the Riviera on Vaal that you can use to create awareness for Earth Day amongst children of all ages:

  • Many websites provide colouring pages and posters for Earth Day. Create awareness by handing earth themed colouring pages to kids to colour in.
  • Create Earth Day puzzles, word search games and mazes themed accordingly.
  • Have kids draw or paint pictures with weather themes.
  • Teach kids about the water cycle and what they can do to save water in fun ways.

Earth Day has been celebrated around the world since 1970. With kids having the most important stake in keeping the planet healthy it is necessary to create awareness from a very young age. As the saying goes: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

Let’s teach our kids to protect the environment for their kids and their kidskids thereafter.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club keeps children busy at Murphy’s Clubhouse, offering loads of fun, educational and stimulating activities. For bookings at this family resort on Vaal contact reservations on 016 420 1300 or reservations@rivieraonvaal.co.za.
