Bat & Owl Boxes at Maccauvlei on Vaal!

We are pleased to say that our new bat and owl boxes have been erected at Maccauvlei on Vaal! Clueless as to why we would erect these boxes at our establishment? Here’s why:

As occupants, we need to take responsibility for protecting the natural heritage of this area. Bat populations are very susceptible to high mortality because of their low productive rates, and there is scientific concern about the conservation status of bats, as many species of bats are increasingly affected by multiple actions of humans (NSPCA, 2012). By erecting bat boxes, bats are offered and alternative roost as opposed to habitation in residential areas. Bats also assist in insect control, so it’s a win-win situation!

As for the owl boxes, many owls hunt within residential and suburban areas and although food is available, breeding sites are not sufficient. By erecting owl boxes, the owls will utilise these boxes for nesting purposes. Owls staying in the area will assist with the control of rodents as well as numerous insect types. Feel free to come and have a look at our newly erected owl and bat boxes at Maccauvlei on Vaal, we trust that this will contribute to the conservation of our surrounding natural habitats and their occupants!

Christmas DIY for kids

It’s scary to think that Christmas is around the corner once again! But for kids this means family, presents and crafts!

Here are some great DIY Christmas ideas for kids – the ideal way to keep them busy over weekends and during the long summer holiday.

Christmas DIY

Christmas DIY

Make your own tree ornaments:

Collect all the old buttons lying around at home and create your own tree ornaments from that. Glue them together and tie a pretty ribbon around them to hang it on your Christmas tree this year.

Make your own rustic Christmas tree:

Pick up some branches from your garden. Remember to use different shapes and sizes. Fill a vase (preferably glass) halfway with pebbles or stones to help anchor your Christmas tree. If you want to paint some of the branches, remember to sand them first to remove all dirt and loose bark. Use a white undercoat if you are using bright colours. You don’t have to paint all of the branches – be creative and dip some of the branch tips in glue and glitter or even acrylic paint for a modern look. Plant the branches in the vase and hang a few Christmas decorations to finish off your rustic Christmas tree.

Decorate your own Christmas wish can:

Christmas gifts are always something to look forward to. Decorate your own Christmas wish can and whenever you think of something you would like to have for Christmas, write it on a piece of paper and put it in the can. That way Father Christmas will know exactly what to give to you on Christmas evening.

Make a Christmas gift for your teacher:

Need some brownie points? Bake a few brownies and fill a mason jar with it. Tie a red or green ribbon around it with a note that reads: Merry Christmas! Toffee apples are also a good idea for Christmas gifts.

DIY gift wrap:

With gift wrap being so expensive during Christmas time, why not make your own? This way the gifts you hand out have an extra personal touch. Take blank sheets of wrapping paper (brown, white, green, red, silver or gold) and paint your own creative shapes and pictures onto it. Make thumbprints, draw Christmas trees, make hand and foot prints and make pictures from it. Think out of the box and have fun with paint and paper!

Kids can also enjoy some of these DIY craft activities at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club’s Murphy’s Clubhouse. Contact Reservations on 016 420 1300 or for more information. Maccauvlei on Vaal also offers a kiddies playroom. They can be contacted on 016 420 2000 or

Keeping the Vaal River clean

Keeping a river like the Vaal River clean could be quite the challenge.

With the Vaal River being the largest tributary to the Orange River and the second longest river (1210 kilometers) in South Africa, it is challenging to get buy-in from the whole country to acknowledge their environmental responsibility. The Vaal River is a key water source for the country, supplying water to South Africa’s industrial heartland, including Johannesburg and Pretoria. It forms an integral part of the Vaal’s wonderland for bird life and fish. If we don’t keep it clean, we endanger our natural ecosystems.

Keeping the Vaal River clean

Keeping the Vaal River clean

In March 2012, the Department of Water Affairs’ spokesperson, Mandla Mathebula, confirmed that reports indicated that the Vaal River will be unfit for human consumption in 2014.

Pollution in the Vaal River is caused by a variety of sources, including waste water works, acid drainage from mines, locals emptying their trash into the river as if it is a dump yard and the lack of sanitation supplies.

Nelson Mandela once said: “We attach a great deal of importance to the question of the environment because until we do things which show how much we value the environment, we are not going to be able to have a healthy society in the world.”

How can we assist in preserving the Vaal River’s cleanliness to create a healthier local society in the Vaal Triangle?

  • Government should take better care of the rural and under-developed populations.
  • Rural populations should be educated on sanitation and clean water supplies.
  • Local companies should join forces with organisations that have the same passion about environmental responsibility. (SAVE is a non-profit organisation which focuses on protecting and maintaining the environmental integrity of the Vaal River).
  • Day visitors and tourists who visit the Vaal for water sport adventures should act in an environmentally responsible manner when it comes to plastic bottles, tin cans, etcetera.
  • Mines and municipal waste water treatment works should maintain their waste systems on a regular basis.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club, as well as its sister company, Maccauvlei on Vaal, takes their responsibility to the environment very seriously and encourage you to join them in protecting the Vaal River from pollution.
